The Rollercoaster Ride (Belle and Sebastian)
Back in the 18th century, the Russian empress Catherine the Great got bored in the long and hot summers. To fight against her boredom, she went up on a hill and after lying down in the slope, she decided to roll down the hill. Although being the Great empress, she still got dizzy. Thus, one of her guards, made a wooden box so she could use it for her spare time. Then, some wheels were added to the box and soon, it became the best hobby of all the Russian aristocracy: rolling down a hill in small carts. In 1884, La Marcus A. Thompson, an American businessman, took note of the Russian game and in New York, hecreated a two-track circuit where carts went up and down. Although it might seem paradoxical, the first rollercoaster was created in the US. However, the “Caudillo” in Spain went a step further into Surrealism. In Donostia, we still keep in mind the phobia he had towards the Red: the pastime that Catherine invented is still called “The Swiss Mountain” in the amusement park in Igeldo.
