state of exception (1972-2004)    "Subjectivity not only liberates itself, it liberates a totality of possibilities. It draws a new horizon"
(Antonio Negri)
Art's greatest advantage is its own subjectivity... or not...

Although art is inside the make-up of a human being, it has always been an exception compared to other areas of society. The artist was either the madman living outside society or if he chose to live within society he played the role of a colourful-feathered parrot. If time ago the production of art was regarded as eccentric, now the modes of production themselves rule the art scene. The capitalistic know-how at the beginning of the 21st century makes easy the knowledge transfer from one field to another and in the last thirty years there have been a lot of such models in the offing in the arts field.

Paradoxical as it may seem, present-day communication networks and limitless resources do not offer scope for swapping and exchange. They can only be found at the periphery of some activities and relations of communication. This type of discourse has formed against the background of the state of exception we're living in and strives for a discourse in favour of plurality.

This is more or less the departure point of the activities organised under the title "State of Exception". But any other departure point would have done the trick because in this case the point of departure is just an excuse to move, to get things moving. There may be a point of departure but there's no set target. Joaquin Jord and Antonio Negri got together and present State of Exception. The practice of art in a novel way (1972-2004), an exhibition that can be enjoyed at Arteleku.

Joaqun Jord. He was one of the promoters of the so-called Barcelona School movement. After his first film (Dante no es nicamente severo) Jord became known in Europe as a controversial figure. In the 90s, he returned to film-making with Un cosc al bosc (1996) and Monkeys like Becky (1999). The latter could be defined as a documentary and denounciation film. In his beautiful movie Monkeys like Betty, Jord based his work on the biography of the Portuguese neurologist Egas Moniz, father of lobotomy, and used it to approach the experience of madness. In the documentary K.O's he went to investigate into the Raval quarter in Barcelona, where neighbours were distressed by the latest cases of pederasty that had taken place there. This Catalonian filmaker offers his view on one of Europe's most complex territories, politically and geographically speaking.

Antonio Negri, philosopher and political theorist. He has taught Political Science in Paris and Padova. He lived in exile in France for fourteen years. On April 7th 1979 he was accused, as were other five thousand people of the workers' movement, of armed insurrection against the state. Nowadays, as a result of his political activism, he is serving his sentence, in the third degree, in Italy. Today, Negri's work is considered to be one of the bases for the antiglobalization movement, and his theories play an active role in it. A wide raging author, among his works: Domination and sabotage, 1979; From mass worker to social worker, 1980; Savage Anomaly, 1981; and Empire, 2000.
